Strengthening Water and Sanitation Infrastructure: CS and PS Inspect TWWDA Projects in Nyeri, Meru, and Marsabit Counties
The Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, in collaboration with Tana Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA), has intensified efforts to improve water access and sanitation services across the Mt. Kenya and Northern Kenya regions. Between 17th and 20th September 2025, Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eng. Mugaa Murithi Eric, alongside Principal Secretaries Julius Korir (State Department for Water and Sanitation) and Ephantus Kimotho Kimani (State Department for Irrigation), led a series of high-level inspections and stakeholder engagements in Nyeri, Meru, and Marsabit Counties.
Nyeri County: Tetu Aguthi Water Supply Project
The exercise began on 17th September 2025 in Nyeri County, where the CS paid a courtesy call to the County Commissioner before proceeding to inspect Tetu Aguthi Water Supply Project. The project addresses persistent water shortages in Tetu East and Tetu West Sub-Counties.
One of the most critical interventions is the replacement of the aging Zaina–Muthua-Ini asbestos pipeline with a modern 250mm HDPE line. This step is not only essential for improving water delivery but also for safeguarding public health, as asbestos materials are hazardous and outdated. By modernizing this infrastructure, the project will provide safer, more durable, and sustainable water services for the people of Tetu.
Meru County: Expanding Sewerage and Water Access
On 18th September 2025, the delegation moved to Meru County where equitable resource distribution was at the centre of discussions with the County Commissioner and Deputy Governor. The leaders prioritized fast-tracking the Meru Sewerage Project, scheduled for completion by 31st December 2025.
Currently 77% complete, the project will serve 193,000 residents through the decommissioning of the old Gakoromone Waste Water Treatment Plant among other benefits.
On 19th September 2025, PS Julius Korir led a follow-up inspection to ensure directives issued to the contractor were being implemented. He urged increased manpower and resources to speed up delivery.
Later, CS Eng. Mugaa Murithi Eric led a public participation forum in Imenti Central on the proposed Baraka Water Project. Once complete, it will benefit over 2,000 residents with reliable clean water for domestic and small-scale irrigation use.
The day also included site visits to the Mukongoro Water Project (set to supply 650 households in Kiria, Mwanganthia, and Gitiye) and the Kaari Water Project, which is expanding access for 5,000 residents. These projects not only reduce water losses but also enhance food security and economic resilience.
Marsabit County: Near-Completion of Flagship Projects
The exercise concluded on 20th September 2025 in Marsabit County with inspections of two flagship projects nearing completion:
Marsabit Water Supply Project (98% complete) and Marsabit Sewerage Project (90% complete). These projects are expected to benefit over 40,000 residents by expanding access to clean water and sanitation services. The PS emphasized collaboration between National and County Governments, calling on administrators to mobilize support for timely completion.
A Commitment to Improved Livelihoods
Through these site visits and engagements, the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening water infrastructure and sanitation systems development. The projects in Nyeri, Meru, and Marsabit Counties represent a significant step toward improving livelihoods, safeguarding public health, and securing a sustainable water future for communities.
