In a significant stride towards environmental conservation, the Tana Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA), in partnership with the County Government of Tharaka Nithi, Nithi Water and Sanitation Company (NIWASCO), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), and the local community, successfully executed a large-scale tree planting initiative in the ecologically vital Nandago Hills in Tharaka Nithi county.
The initiative was driven by the urgent need to restore the area’s forest cover, protect water catchment areas, and enhance biodiversity. By planting 10,000 indigenous tree seedlings, the partners have taken a substantial step towards revitalizing the ecosystem of Nandago Hills.
The collaboration between TWWDA, the County Government, NIWASCO, KFS, and the local community has been instrumental in the success of this project. This partnership demonstrates the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges. By working hand-in-hand with the local community, the initiative has not only planted trees but also nurtured a sense of ownership and responsibility for the environment among residents.
The long-term benefits of this project are immense. The increased forest cover will help in water retention, reducing soil erosion, and creating a conducive habitat for wildlife. Moreover, it will contribute to improved air quality and climate regulation.
TWWDA, the County Government, NIWASCO, KFS, and the community have pledged their continued commitment to the project. Regular monitoring and care of the newly planted trees, as well as community education programs, are planned to ensure the project’s long-term success.
This remarkable achievement serves as an inspiration for other regions facing similar environmental challenges. It demonstrates that with concerted efforts, it is possible to restore degraded ecosystems and build a sustainable future for generations to come.
