On 3rd July 2025, the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Eng. Mugaa Murithi Eric, paid a courtesy call to the County Commissioner of Tharaka Nithi County ahead of an extensive inspection tour of ongoing and upcoming water and sanitation projects in the region.

During the meeting, discussions focused on initiatives to improve domestic water supply and irrigation services, with particular emphasis on the Last Mile Connectivity of the Chuka and Chogoria Water Supply & Sewerage Projects. These projects are designed to expand access to clean water and proper sanitation for more households and communities within the county.

Stakeholders also deliberated on persistent challenges in the water and sanitation sector and explored sustainable solutions to unlock universal access.

The CS was accompanied by a high-level delegation including Hon. George Muragara, MP Tharaka, several Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), the Chairperson, Director, and CEO of Tana Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA), the CEO of the National Irrigation Authority, officials from the County Government of Tharaka Nithi, and representatives from Niwasco.

As part of the visit, the CS inspected the Kibunga–Kakimiki Water Supply Project, a vital system constructed by TWWDA in 2010 to provide clean and reliable water to local communities.

Currently, the system serves approximately 10,000 residents. However, ongoing interventions aim to enhance its efficiency by reducing non-revenue water (NRW) and upgrading the infrastructure. Once completed, the project is expected to double its impact, expanding water coverage to reach over 20,000 people, including households, schools, and health facilities.

In his remarks, Eng. Mugaa reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to transforming lives by ensuring clean water, enhanced irrigation, and dignified sanitation for all. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the national government, county government, water agencies, and communities to achieve long-term water security in Tharaka Nithi and beyond.
